SELF EVALUATION
1.
a. I have always known that artists use symbolism to represent a deeper meaning than what their art work literally shows. A common example of symbolism that always seems to pop up frequently is politics. It is shown in a lot of satire works and most of the time they are criticising the government, politicians, and their decisions. I have never really thought to use symbolism in any of my previous works before I tool this class. When I did though, they normally very minor and seemed more like allusions than symbolism. b. My understanding of symbolism itself has not changed. After seeing various examples that you have shown us in class, and in the artwork of other classmates I see that you can incorporate symbolism in your art in more ways than one. In my "Artists Take a Stand" painting I have some symbolism depicting depicting the tragedies that come along with terrorism and warfare in general. My work has the permanent shadow of a family shading hand in hand together when the bomb was detonated. I chose to do that because it shows that even though they lost their lives unjustly to extremist groups like ISIS the memory of them will be there for ever. 2. a. One of the most useful things I learned this semester is how to draw in a one point prospective. Though I have not applied it out of class I find it extremely helpful because I tend to be very meticulous about objects looking correct in respect to the viewing angle. I also thought that learning how to shade with a wider range of values was a big help in making my sketches look more dimensional and life like. Though not as fundamental as shading and perspective, I enjoyed learning water color painting techniques. Since I like to use water color from time to time I feel like they will help me evolve my paintings into something with more interesting textures than just having normal, basic washes. b. I don't have any real complaints about the way this class is structured. I like how laid back the environment is, which helps with coming up with creative ideas for the next project. It also helps because we are able to go at our own pace when working. I enjoy it as a forth period since it's a nice way to end the school day. 1. What new skills did you learn as part of this unit?
I learned a lot of new skills during this unit. Such as new painting procedures that help create depth to your painting, like using different washes or using a wet on wet technique when using watercolors to achieve a gradient. I also learned how to work with clay to create a slab. From that I got to learn how to use different tools to add texture to my slab, some smooth things out while others can add textures like small dimples or waves. 2. What project from Unit 3 did you find to be the most successful? Why? I think my clay slab was the most successful out of all the projects I worked on this unit. Though it was difficult to work with because of how messy it was, and there was an underlying fear that my slab would explode in the kiln because I didn't knead it long enough. But in the end I was surprised that the geometric lines came out better than expected, and once I painted the whole thing and sprayed it with polyurethane everything looked a lot more polished and put together. 3. What media are you interested in using again and why? I would like to work with clay again sometime later in the future. Sometimes it feels good to take a break with painting or sketching and do something more hands on for a change. By working with clay you get a completely different array Also, in the end you get something more dimensional to display instead of another flat paper that you can just hang on your wall. 1. Did you enjoy working with a limit?
At first I didn't because my options were limited but after I started I didn't mind at all. Sometimes it feels better to have a limit on what you're able to do so that you are not overwhelmed. It also helps because you put more thinking power into how you are going to execute your final project rather than what you execute, which takes up more precious time. Without the limit I would have never thought of doing pointillism with q-tips. 2. In this experiment I asked you to experiment, how did this help you plan? Because I was able to experiment with my options beforehand I was able to see what I could and couldn't do with each medium. I was able to narrow down what I wanted to do exactly without having to start one project with a hypothetical idea in mind, but having to start over because I wasn't able to get the results I wanted. This helped because I have the tendency to start over frequently if I am unsatisfied with the smallest of things. 3. How did your artwork turn out? Do you think you were successful? I was very happy with how my lighthouse turned out in the end. Though it was a bit tedious to sit there and dot hundreds of times to fill up a sheet that big it gave the overall work a more unique look. The only thing that I had trouble with in the end was that with the darker colors, the dot effect did not show at all. It took me a few tries but I eventually had success by using many different shades on top of each other. |
